About

We build the part everybody else treats as packaging.

Customized Padfolios makes padfolios to order — zippered letter covers, open folios, junior 5 x 8 covers, riveted three-ring binders, full-grain leather, and cork and recycled PU.

Custom printed padfolios with logo

A padfolio is not a notebook with a cover on it. It is a hinge that gets opened and shut several thousand times, and almost every one we are asked to replace failed in the same place: the fold.

Wrap a cover material tightly over two hard boards with no gap between them and the material has to stretch over a hard edge every single time the folio opens. Run the stitch line straight down that fold as well and you have perforated the hinge. Six months later there is a pale crack down the spine and the folio is finished.

So we build the spine with a relief gap, keep the stitch line beside the fold rather than through it, skive hide before folding it, and take the zip round a radiused corner instead of a square one. None of those cost anything per unit. They are pattern decisions.

Why we exist

Padfolios are bought in bulk for conferences, onboarding and gifting, which means they are specified by nobody and quoted on the cover material alone.

The results are predictable: a cracked spine within a year, a zip that has popped a tooth at the corner, a ring mechanism that peeled off the board and took the lining with it, and — worst of all — a cover built around a bespoke pad size that becomes landfill the day the first refill runs out.

The pad is a consumable. The cover is the asset.

That is the sentence the whole catalogue is built on. A padfolio should outlive twenty pads, so the pad has to be a stock size the buyer can still walk into a stationer and re-buy in five years — letter, or 5 x 8 for the junior covers.

It also has to be held by a board retainer or an elastic rather than glued into the cover, because a glued pad is a cover you cannot refill and a pad you will find loose in a bag.

What we actually make

Zippered letter covers on a radiused zip path in a coil gauge matched to the cover weight. Open folios with a magnetic or tuck closure and nothing on them that can break. Junior 5 x 8 covers for a jacket pocket or a glovebox. Three-ring binders with the mechanism riveted through the back board rather than glued to it. Full-grain leather, skived at the spine and burnished at the edges. And cork, RPET and recycled PU with the recycled content given as a percentage per component.

Decoration is blind deboss, foil or laser, and on recycled and PU covers the deboss die is run cooler and slower so it does not gloss a halo into the surface around the mark.

How we price

No dollar figures on this site. Price moves with cover material, construction, closure, decoration and quantity, and it falls steeply into the hundreds and thousands. Send the details and a real quote comes back the same day, with a lowest-price guarantee if you are already holding a cheaper one.

On the small things that decide it

A relief gap at the spine. A stitch line beside the fold. A radiused zip corner. A rivet instead of glue. A pen loop cut for a real pen.

Each of those is nearly free, and each is the difference between a folio still in use in five years and one in a drawer by the end of the quarter.
